In June of 2013, Red Deer will have the privilege of hosting the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards Gala. This vice-regal event celebrates the premier artists in our province and the importance of the arts to Alberta. The prestigious Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards will take place on Saturday, June 15. Red Deer College will be the host venue for the event, with the dinner held at the innovative Cenovus Centre, to be followed by performances, the awards gala, and a dessert reception at the beautiful Red Deer College Arts Centre. This elegant, black tie evening will celebrate the arts in Alberta and will showcase a variety of local and provincial performers.

Red Deer’s Role in this Celebration

Hosting the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards will be a community endeavour, and Red Deer is just the community to make it happen. The planning and preparation for this event is in the final stages, and positive partnerships and teamwork have made this a successful process.

Red Deer has the facilities and the community partnerships necessary to coordinate an event of this prestige. The City of Red Deer is pleased to partner with Red Deer College, and to work with groups and individuals from across the community to establish the details, activities, and locations of the awards.

2013 is also a special year for our city, as it will be a year of centennial celebrations in the community. From festivals and events to museum exhibits and art shows, Red Deer will be alive with activities and excitement to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of its incorporation as a city. The stage has been perfectly set to host The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards Gala, one of the most high-profile, prestigious events the city has seen.

A Week of Arts and Culture: June 10 – 16, 2013

The awards and gala will be the culmination of a week-long series of arts and culture events in Red Deer. These community-organized activities will celebrate all kinds of arts – from literary to visual to performing. From June 10 to 16, the public will be able to enjoy a wealth of free and low-cost arts events across the city, offered by members of Red Deer Arts Council.

Background on the Distinguished Artist Awards

Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards graphicThe Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards celebrates excellence in and underlines the importance of the arts in Alberta. The awards are administered by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation. The Foundation was established in 2003 and operates two programs of Awards under the patronage of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta who presents the Awards.

Distinguished Artist Awards are presented every second year, beginning in 2005. The program gives up to three awards of $30,000 each in recognition of outstanding achievement in the arts by Albertans or significant contribution to the arts in Alberta. Emerging Artist Awards are presented in the intervening years beginning in 2008. The Award consists of a cash prize of $10,000 and a medal. Up to 10 Awards are given each time. To date, 25 Emerging Artist Awards have been given awards totaling $250,000. Awards programs of the Foundation are funded by disbursements from an endowment fund raised privately in Alberta and added to by the Governments of Alberta and of Canada in Alberta’s centennial year.

The Awards Programs of the Foundation were established under the founding patronage of The Late Honourable Dr. Lois E. Hole, C.M., A.O.E., Lieutenant Governor of Alberta from 2000 – 2005, and continue under the patronage of His Honour Col. (Ret’d) the Honourable Donald S. Ethell, OC, OMM, AOE, MSC, CD, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.
