policy-wise-AlbertaTwo significant changes took place at The Alberta Centre for Child, Family and Community Research Annual General Meeting in Edmonton on Friday, September 23. A new name, PolicyWise for Children & Families, was ratified by Members of the organization, and Dr. James Talbot, former Chief Medical Officer of Health for Alberta and Nunavut, was elected to replace Dr. Roger Palmer as the organization’s Chair. “The name PolicyWise emphasizes our organization’s long-term role in creating and mobilizing evidence to inform social policy,” said Robyn Blackadar, President and CEO of PolicyWise. “And, we will benefit from Dr. Talbot’s extensive knowledge of the social determinants of health and his commitment to evidence-informed decisions to improve the well-being of Albertans.”

PolicyWise was established as a not-for-profit corporation in 2003 and is a partnership between Alberta’s universities, the community and Alberta Human Services. Its mandate is to advance knowledge by creating a comprehensive understanding of well-being and inspiring collaborative action for improving social policy and practice. With the development of the Child and Youth Data Laboratory in 2007, The Lab plays a unique role in the analysis and interpretation of linked administrative data collected across all child and youth serving ministries. PolicyWise’ most recent data initiative is a research data repository called SAGE, Secondary Analysis to Generate Evidence. SAGE promotes good data management and increased research productivity. The change in name will not affect partners, stakeholders or grant recipients from a day-to-day standpoint.

PolicyWise’ commitment to strong and productive relationships to improve child, family and community well-being is unwavering. The organization will continue under current leadership and all PolicyWise activities will continue as planned. Over the coming days, email addresses, website and other communication materials will change to reflect the new name.

PolicyWise for Children & Families looks forward to continuing to work with partners and stakeholders to improve well-being by leading, creating, enabling and mobilizing research and evaluation for evidence informed policy and practice.
