ACWSAs the Edmonton Wildcats prepare for their first home game of the season on Saturday, August 26, the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) is pleased to announce our new partnership with them. The partnership will build on ACWS’s Leading Change™ call to action to end gender-based violence. ACWS will work with Wildcats players, coaches and staff as they become community ambassadors in the work to empower communities to stand up to everyday sexism and end violence against women.

Jan Reimer, Executive Director of ACWS said,

We’re delighted to have support from the Edmonton Wildcats. The partnership reflects an important part of our work to build relationships with sports leaders across the Province. These athletes are heroes to many in the community and have the opportunity to stand up and encourage leadership on these issues.

Meghann Tanner, General Manager of the Edmonton Wildcats also spoke highly of the partnership:

Our staff and team are thrilled to partner with ACWS. We have already learned an incredible amount about the impact of violence against women.” She continued, “We have some incredible athletes on our team, but what’s inspiring about ACWS’s Leading Change initiative is that it drives home the fact that we all need to be leaders against sexism— on and off the field, in and out of the locker-room.

Christie Lavan, Leading Change Program Developer said,

Sports bring people together, so this is a great opportunity to foster community conversations that build awareness of what people can do in their own lives to prevent gender-based violence. Our work with the Wildcats has expanded to include regular culture-shifting conversations, grounded in respecting the strength that men bring to the movement to end violence against women.

About Leading Change™:

Leading Change™ is a call to action created by Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters, which seeks to empower individuals to stand up to sexist behaviour in a range of social contexts – in high schools, at sporting events or during a night out with friends.

Leading Change™ initially worked with the Wildcats in 2014 when the ACWS call to action was first launched. This relationship has now been expanded into a partnership to end violence against women.

ACWS is also working with other sports teams, including the Calgary Stampeders. View our most recent PSA at the link below:
