magnus-macfarlane-barrowScotsman Magnus is the founder and CEO of Mary’s Meals, the global child hunger charity which today ensures that 1,187,104 of the world’s poorest children receive a nutritious meal every day they attend school. The organization provides one daily meal in a place of learning in order to attract chronically poor children into the classroom, where they receive an education that can, in the future, be their ladder out of poverty. Magnus will have the unique opportunity to talk to students and members of the public at the Calgary school on Monday, 26 September at 7pm, seeking to inspire them with the story of Mary’s Meals – from its humble beginnings in a tin shed in rural Scotland to a global movement of people, including supporters of Mary’s Meals Canada, who believe that no child should go hungry in this world of plenty.

Author & Motivational Speaker Darci Lang to “Focus on the Positive” in Calgary and Edmonton

Darci-LangThe Supply Chain Management Association of Alberta presents the Regina-based entrepreneur Darci Lang and her philosophy, “Focus on the 90%,” which emphasizes focusing on the positive in our personal and professional lives to increase our odds for success. Every month, from September to May, the SCMA AB holds networking meetings in Calgary and Edmonton, usually with dinner, for its members and others in the supply chain profession. The networking dinner meetings will be a little different this March as the SCMA-AB hopes Darci Lang’s message will inspire all those in attendance. Darci Lang, author of Focus on the 90%, uses one simple tool — a magnifying glass — to reframe how we view our jobs, our co‐workers, our clients and our families. Using this one simple tool, Darci demonstrates how anyone can change their focus and make interactions with others more positive and productive.

Gaming Funds for Nonprofits – Free Webinar Series | February 11 & March 3

webinarThe Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) is offering a free, two-part webinar series about the use of gaming funds for nonprofits in Alberta. Both webinars feature a live question and answer period. This series was designed to create awareness and provide information about the process and requirements of charitable gaming in Alberta. The webinar series will be facilitated by Volunteer Alberta and feature a speaker from the Gaming Information for Charitable Groups (GAIN) Program. The presentations will cover topics of interest to the non-profit sector as identified in the survey conducted by Volunteer Alberta in May of 2015. Gain a better understanding of how AGLC and gaming proceeds can benefit your organization in the upcoming sessions: the first on February 11 and the second on March 3. Registration is free.

Nominees Announced for 45th Annual JUNO Awards to be Hosted in Calgary on April 3, 2016

Juno-AwardsDrake, Justin Bieber and the Weeknd dominated this year’s Juno Award nominations. The Weeknd received six nominations including JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. Drake and Justin Bieber garnered five nods each and both are nominated for JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, and Artist of the Year. Drake also received a nomination for Rap Recording of the Year and Bieber was nominated for Pop Album of the Year. Alessia Cara was nominated for JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Breakthrough Artist of the Year and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year and Shawn Mendes was nominated for JUNO Fan Choice, Album of the Year, Artist for the Year and Pop Album of the Year. JUNO Week runs from March 28 – April 3 and The 2016 JUNO Awards show will be broadcast live on CTV.

Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter Hosts the 22nd Annual Turning Points Gala in Calgary on April 28

CWESThis year will mark “42 years of Taking a Stand Against Family Violence” for the agency and this year’s fundraising gala will commemorate this important milestone. This social event and charity fundraiser will feature speeches from local community leaders who are Take A Stand Ambassadors for the organization and terrific auction prizes. This signature event helps the agency raise much needed funds for its safety, healing and prevention programs which help women, children, youth and men recover from the effects of violence and abuse. Though the Emergency Shelter is the cornerstone of the organization, the agency is “more than a Shelter”, providing many free programs and services to the community. Since its inception, the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter has changed the lives of more than 160,000 Calgarians by helping them build safe lives and healthy relationships.
