The King’s University Announces Dean for New Business School

King's University logoThe King’s University has announced that Dr. Elden Wiebe is the dean of its new school of business effective immediately. The school is made possible by initial pledges of $8.5 million by two donors. “The new school of business will offer business programs unique to Western Canada based on current research and best-in-class, leading business practices,” says Dr. Melanie Humphreys, President of The King’s University. “Dr. Wiebe embraces our vision of educating young leaders with a holistic and integrated world view.” Dr. Wiebe earned degrees at Trinity Western University and Regent College, before receiving his doctorate at the University of Alberta in 2005. He is also a graduate of the Arrow Leadership Program, a two-year program that mentors developing leaders in a holistic manner.

YWCA Edmonton Celebrates the Extraordinary Achievements of 55 Women on May 29

YWCA EdmontonOn Thursday night, the 32nd annual Women of Distinction Awards will celebrate a record 55 Edmonton women at Northlands’ Alberta Ballroom. YWCA Edmonton will honour 55 extraordinary women for their leadership abilities and work to better society. These women were nominated by community members who have been inspired by their successes in eight categories: Advocate, Arts & Culture, Volunteer, Educator, Entrepreneur & Businesswoman, Trailblazer, Turning Point and Young Woman of Distinction. YWCA Edmonton’s Board of Directors will also present the Honourable  Lois E Hole Award for Lifetime Achievement to Sister Lucinda Patterson former Executive Director of the Lurana Women’s Shelter and now a member of their Board of Directors.

Keep it in the Ring for YWCA Edmonton with MFC Fighter Vic Valimaki

YWCA EdmontonThe world of MMA (mixed martial arts) combines excitement, athleticism, strength and, in the eyes of some, violence. YWCA Edmonton has partnered with local MFC (Maximum Fighting Championship) Fighter, Vic Valimaki, to help erase the stigma that MMA is solely a violent sport and to raise awareness of the importance of leaving “fighting” to the professionals.  The sport of MMA has evolved into a mainstream sport with world class athletes, requiring dedication and discipline to excel. Vic believes strongly in keeping his actions in the ring, hence the slogan of ‘Keep it in the Ring’.  Although Vic fights for a living, he never condones violence against women and children. “I fight professionally yes, but I know there is a huge difference between fighting with skill and fighting with anger.”

Edmonton-based Localize Services Wins Top Honours At VenturePrize 2014

Localize ServicesLocalize Services Inc., winner of the 2014 VenturePrize Fast Growth competition, walked off with the top prize of $100,000 at the TEC VenturePrize Awards in support of emerging Alberta businesses at the Shaw Conference Centre Wednesday evening. As an additional plus, Localize captured the Edmonton Journal’s People’s Choice Award with 59.5% of the online votes cast in the weeks leading up to the competition’s finale.  Localize Services Ltd. is an Edmonton-based company that has created a grocery shelf labelling service enabling shoppers to quickly learn where products come from and other information, allowing grocers to easily embark on local or regional food campaigns. The service is already in 50 grocery stores and expects to expand to 250 stores in Western Canada within the next few months.
