Alberta Centre for Child, Family and Community Research Changes Name, Branding and Renews Organization’s Commitment

policy-wise-AlbertaTwo significant changes took place at The Alberta Centre for Child, Family and Community Research Annual General Meeting in Edmonton on Friday, September 23. A new name, PolicyWise for Children & Families, was ratified by Members of the organization, and Dr. James Talbot, former Chief Medical Officer of Health for Alberta and Nunavut, was elected to replace Dr. Roger Palmer as the organization’s Chair. “The name PolicyWise emphasizes our organization’s long-term role in creating and mobilizing evidence to inform social policy,” said Robyn Blackadar, President and CEO of PolicyWise. “And, we will benefit from Dr. Talbot’s extensive knowledge of the social determinants of health and his commitment to evidence-informed decisions to improve the well-being of Albertans.”

Calgary’s Clear Water Academy Hosts CNN Hero and One of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow

The organization provides one daily meal in a place of learning in order to attract chronically poor children into the classroom, where they receive an education that can, in the future, be their ladder out of poverty. Magnus will have the unique opportunity to talk to students and members of the public at the Calgary school on Monday, 26 September at 7pm, seeking to inspire them with the story of Mary’s Meals – from its humble beginnings in a tin shed in rural Scotland to a global movement of people, including supporters of Mary’s Meals Canada, who believe that no child should go hungry in this world of plenty.

The 2016 Edmonton Comedy Festival to Deliver Laughs on Thanksgiving Weekend

Calling All Men: Walk a Mile in Her Shoes in Support of Violence Prevention | 11:30am on September 21 | Edmonton

Walk a Mile-EdmontonWalk a Mile in Her Shoes is a pledge-based fundraiser where men walk in women’s heels to raise awareness of family violence, and funds to support YWCA Edmonton violence prevention and recovery programs. Only men can participate in the walk; however, women play a big role as a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes ally.  Women can encourage and challenge men to participate and raise funds to help women and children walk away from family violence. Men can register as an individual, create a team, or join an existing team. Each walker is encouraged to raise $1,000 in pledges to help us meet our goal of $160,000. Proceeds from this event fund YWCA Edmonton counselling centre and violence prevention and recovery programs. YWCA Edmonton needs your help to raise funds to support critical programs and services that help women and families walk away from domestic violence.
