Norwood Centre’s Celebrates their 50th Anniversary on September 28, 2013

Norwood Child + Family Resource CentreA lot changes in fifty years. In 1963, the Norwood Readiness Centre was a newly created preparatory program with “an emphasis on language and emotional development.” Since then, they moved from an old, white house into an ever-expanding building covered in murals and greetings in a handful of languages. At times they have offered programs ranging from crafts and sewing to carpentry and creative dance. Today, the Norwood Child and Family Resource Centre caters to a wide range of needs and is filled with people of diverse backgrounds. A world map in their hallway dotted with little blue stickers shows many of their clients have come from around the world before settling in Edmonton. The staff speaks over seventeen different languages between them. The Centre’s many offerings include: a “respite for family” day care program, a preschool readiness program, a school transition program, adorable child-sized toilets, rooms available for community and service agencies to use, and a licensed commercial kitchen, which serves thousands of snacks and meals a year. But one thing has never changed — the Centre’s mission to promote active involvement by children and their families in a strong, vibrant community.
