Social workers like the direction of the Social Policy Framework released by the Government of Alberta last week, especially the goals of reducing inequality and protecting vulnerable people. Recent reports show the gap between the majority of Albertans and those at the top of the income scale is growing faster than anywhere else in Canada. “Our own Social Policy Framework: Fairness and Justice for All spells out the progressive policies needed to deal with inequities and disparity. I’m glad to see that this has finally been recognized as a serious problem that needs to be dealt with,” said Alberta College of Social Workers President, Bob Johnson. At the same time, social workers are concerned about the possible downloading of services and lack of accountability.
