Alberta Emerald Foundation Announces 2017 Award Winners

Emerald-AwardsFor the past 26 years, the Emerald Awards have recognized and celebrated the outstanding environmental achievements of large and small businesses, individuals, not-for-profit associations, community groups, youth and governments. Uniquely Albertan, the Emerald Awards are the only award of their kind in our country, showcasing environmental excellence across all sectors. Each year from November until February, the Alberta Emerald Foundation receives Emerald Award nominations in 12 established categories.  A panel of knowledgeable judges with cross-sector experience carry out an independent evaluation based on established criteria and select the finalists and recipients.

Edmonton Pride Day Parade and Festival 2017 to Showcase the Many Sides of Pride

Edmonton-PrideThe 37th annual Edmonton Pride festival will return to Old Strathcona from June 9-18. The pride parade on June 10 at 11 a.m. is expected to draw tens of thousands of spectators. This year’s parade grand marshal is the Edmonton two spirit community, a group that has often been underrepresented in the LGBTQ+ community. After the parade, the main festival will take place in End of Steel Park and Strathcona Park until 6 p.m. with vendors, activities, live music and the popular beer gardens.

ACWS Announces New Workplace Training Program to Support Victims of Domestic Violence

domestic-violenceTo coincide with National Victims and Survivors of Crime Week (NVSCW)— from May 29th to June 2nd — the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS)  announced their newest training and educational outreach program. The training program, Domestic Violence and Your Workplace, educates employers and employees to recognize the signs of abuse and to make effective interventions on behalf of colleagues/staff facing domestic violence.

Streets Alive Mission Launches Men’s Clothing Drive in Lethbridge

Streets Alive Mission are in desperate need and are asking the Lethbridge community to support their PIN Bank with Men’s Clothing donations.  Currently there is little to no stock on the shelves.  People living on the street have no place to keep a second set of clothes or a place to do laundry.  The P.I.N. (People In Need) Bank acts as a closet for these people.  The P.I.N. Bank is the workhorse of the Mission.  Acting as the closet for the street population, it provides, free of charge, the things that people require for basic survival, employment, or setting up a new household.  The result is that once a week (more often in bad weather) they are able to come and get clean clothes in exchange for the clothes they are wearing.  Those clothes are laundered and re-enter the bank.
