The 2017 Duncan Craig Laurel Awards Invite Applications from NonProfits in Edmonton

Laurel-Awards-LogoThe Laurel Awards annually recognizes the achievements of non profit groups in Edmonton and area including Drayton Valley. Each year starting in February until the end of May, they invite applications from non profit groups for these awards. A selection committee then evaluates the programs and projects on the basis of their successful innovation and creativity, regardless of size and overall budget and select the winners. This year we celebrate the Laurel Awards at a luncheon on September 13, 2017 at The Westin Edmonton. The five awards that will be presented at this year’s luncheon will receive cash prizes: Gold $5000 | Silver $3000 | Bronze $2000 | Staff Choice $1000 | Audience Choice $500. Applications must be submitted by the non profit organization responsible for the program or project by May 31, 2017 at 11:00 pm MST.

Now in its thirteenth year, this unique performance event features Edmonton’s professional and upcoming circus artists along with physical theatre, comedy and dance. “Let There Be Height” is one of a kind in Edmonton – come and see ordinary people doing extraordinary things, 20 feet in the air. You may have to remind yourself to breath as you witness the astonishing skills of more than 75 up & coming aerial artists as they flaunt gravity climbing, hanging and dropping on the trapeze, aerial silks, hoop, vertical rope, and more. The theme for the 2017 showcase is: Super Heroes, Super Villains, and Superlatives.

ABMI Announces New Online Portal on Alberta’s Plants and Animals Now Available

ABMI-logoFor the first time, Albertans now have a resource at their fingertips that provides detailed information on hundreds of Alberta’s plant and animal species. Today, the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI)—a global leader in biodiversity monitoring—released its online Data & Analytics Portal to provide easy access to the Institute’s extensive biodiversity-related data, reports, and maps. A key part of the ABMI Data & Analytics Portal is the ABMI Biodiversity Browser (BB), which presents more than 350 (and counting) full profiles of various bird, mammal, and vascular plant species. The goal is to have species profiles for the 2000+ species the ABMI collects data on. Each profile includes information on the species’ habitat preferences and how human activities, such as agriculture and forestry, affect its abundance.
