Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science & Technology (Wisest) Announces Annual Lecture & Symposium

wisestWISEST announced that their 2016 keynote speaker is Dr. Anne Condon, a Professor of Computing Science at the University of British Columbia, where she has served as Department Head and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Science. Dr. Condon’s research in computational complexity theory and algorithms currently focuses on DNA programming – the art and science of writing programs that are realized and executed by DNA. She is an ACM Fellow, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, has held the NSERC/General Motors Canada Chair for Women in Science and Engineering, and received the Computing Research Association’s Habermann Award for her work on increasing the numbers and successes of women in computing research.

Fundraising Fridays Six-Part Webinar Series to Launch in Alberta on Friday, November 4

Not a big surprise – older donors give significantly more than younger generations, and they still prefer their old-timey fountain pens and paper checks. Yet, online fundraising as a proportion of overall revenue continues to increase, year after year. Online fundraising is vital, recurring monthly donations are gaining steam, and fundraising by email still yields about $40 for every 1,000 recipients and this per donor amount increases significantly during the Christmas season and towards the end of the year. To help nonprofit organizations take advantage of increased year end fundraising opporunities, we’ve put together an six-part webinar series called Fundraising Fridays.

Lethbridge Community Network Receives $325K to Create 29 Technology Internships for Youth Across Alberta

lethbridge-community-networkLethbridge Community Network entered into an agreement announced on October 7, 2016  valued at $325,000 to create 29 paid youth internships in technology and digital skill roles throughout Alberta, with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. The ISEDC’s Youth Internships Program allows youth to acquire technical and soft skills using digital technologies and supports a range of host organizations and businesses that are looking to engage in online activities. Internships are integral to Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy; pairing youth with Information Communication and Technology (ICT) related job opportunities, for over 1000 young Canadians each year. The 29 intern positions are based on 600 hours of work. The hosting organizations are eligible to receive up to $15 per hour to subsidize youth intern wages.

Do You Know an Indigenous Youth Who is Making a Difference in Southern Alberta? Nominate them for a SAIYAward

saiya-awardsThe SAIYAwards recognize Indigenous youth in Southern Alberta who demonstrates a strong desire and commitment to achieve their goals. These awards are to encourage confidence and help create Indigenous youth ambassadors for the future. For the first time ever in Southern Alberta these awards will recognize and support indigenous youth 13 – 21 years who are contributing to a solution. Recipients will be given an award as well as $1,000 towards future goals and ideas. They will represent themselves and the SAIYAwards as ambassadors for the year. The SAIYAwards theme will be “The Elders are Watching” and will celebrate Indigenous youth who are making a difference in their communities, developing healthy solutions and growing into successful leaders and ambassadors for Canada. The goal of the SAIYAwards is to recognize the amazing contributions Indigenous youth are making to the community.
